Course Overview

In a major incident the emergency services will have a gold commander. Your organisation needs one too: someone who sets the strategy, protects people and the business, speaks for the organisation and makes decisions that will be examined at an inquest or inquiry. The emergency services train their gold commanders through the Multi Agency Gold Incident Command course. Most private sector leaders have no equivalent.

This course fills that gap. It follows the same structure as public sector gold command training and executive crisis leadership programmes, and applies it to venues, events and businesses. It suits boards and executive teams, and the senior person designated as responsible for premises or events under Martyn’s Law.

Day one: the strategic commander. The role of gold, the legal and regulatory framework (including the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, health and safety duties and Martyn’s Law), setting a strategic aim and objectives, how the emergency services and the Strategic Coordinating Group work and how to work alongside them, the human impact on casualties, families and staff, and lessons from the inquiries into the Manchester Arena attack, the London Bridge attack and the Grenfell Tower fire.

Day two: leading through the crisis. Leadership and decision making under extreme pressure, supporting your team through a long incident, strategic communications with staff, families, partners and the media, business continuity and recovery, then an immersive crisis simulation in which delegates run a gold group as the incident develops, followed by a structured debrief and a personal action plan.

This course is part of our command pathway: Event Control and Bronze Command, Silver Event Command and Strategic (Gold) Crisis Command, supported by JESIP for Events and Venues.

About the Trainer

Certified by 1705 Consultancy and delivered by former emergency services commanders who have led incidents under real conditions, not just studied them. The course draws on gold and silver command experience from real major incidents. 1705 Consultancy also provides event command and safety management on live events, so the course reflects how incidents actually unfold in a control room and on the ground.
