Course Overview

Every significant decision in an incident needs a record of what was decided, by whom, when and why. When that record is missing or unclear, good decisions become hard to defend and lessons are lost. The loggist is the person who makes sure it is there.

This course trains control room staff, personal assistants, administrators and anyone else who may be asked to keep a log for a commander or crisis team. It covers the role of the loggist and how to work with the decision maker, what makes a decision log defensible, how to record decisions, options considered and rationale, how to handle times, sources and corrections, and how logs are used afterwards in debriefs, investigations and inquiries.

Delegates practise logging in real time during a short live scenario, then review their logs against a model answer. The course pairs well with Event Control and Bronze Command, where decision logs are used throughout the exercise.

About the Trainer

Certified by 1705 Consultancy and delivered by former emergency services commanders who have led incidents under real conditions, not just studied them. 1705 Consultancy also provides event command and safety management on live events, so the course reflects how incidents actually unfold in a control room and on the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

A loggist keeps an accurate, timed record of a commander’s or crisis team’s decisions, the options considered and the reasons behind them, so the response can be reviewed and defended later.

Decisions made in an incident may be examined at a debrief, inquest, inquiry or in court. A clear log shows what was known at the time and why each decision was reasonable.
