Course Overview

Staff in schools and colleges deal with escalating behaviour every day, from a pupil in crisis to an angry parent at reception or a confrontation at the gate. They need the confidence to respond calmly and safely, in a way that protects the young person, other pupils and themselves, and that stands up to scrutiny afterwards.

This course covers why behaviour escalates, recognising triggers and early warning signs, de-escalation with children and young people, managing confrontation with parents and visitors, personal safety and positioning, the law and Department for Education guidance on the use of reasonable force, recording and reporting incidents, safeguarding considerations, and supporting staff and pupils afterwards. It is built around your setting and your behaviour policy.

Choose the format that fits your team.

  • Half day: the essentials of preventing and calming challenging behaviour, for all staff.
  • Full day: the core skills plus scenario practice based on your own school or college.
  • Two days: extended practical sessions and role play, including personal safety and moving away from aggression.

All three run in person at your premises. The half day and full day can also run live online, focusing on communication and de-escalation skills; practical and physical elements are delivered in person only.
