Evacuation Drill Training

Practical Evacuation, Accountability and Emergency Movement Training

Realistic evacuation drill training designed to test procedures, improve staff confidence and identify how people actually move, communicate and respond during an emergency.

An evacuation plan is only useful if people understand it, can follow it under pressure and know what to do when the expected route, exit or assembly point is no longer the safest option.

Our Evacuation Drill Training helps organisations test their procedures in practice, improve staff readiness and strengthen emergency response arrangements in line with workplace safety, public safety and Martyn’s Law preparedness expectations.

Course Overview

Evacuation drills are often treated as routine compliance exercises.  A bell sounds, people leave, a time is recorded and the organisation moves on.  In reality, an effective evacuation drill should test far more than how quickly people exit a building.

A properly designed drill should examine communication, leadership, route selection, vulnerable persons, assembly point management, roll call or accountability processes, staff confidence, visitor management and decision making when conditions change.

HSE guidance highlights that emergency plans should be clearly agreed, recorded and rehearsed, with people more likely to respond reliably when they are trained, competent and take part in regular and realistic practice.  Government fire safety guidance also confirms that emergency plans should include clear escape routes, employee training and a safe meeting point.

This course is designed to help organisations move beyond the basic fire drill and develop practical confidence in emergency movement, communication and accountability.  It can be tailored to fire evacuation, security related evacuation, partial evacuation, staged evacuation, crowd movement, visitor evacuation or more complex environments where evacuation may need to be balanced against invacuation or lockdown options.

The course also links directly to Martyn’s Law preparedness.  Organisations within scope will need clear, practical and proportionate procedures for protecting people during terrorist related incidents.  Evacuation, invacuation, lockdown and communication arrangements must be understood, rehearsed and capable of being used during a high pressure event.  NPSA guidance also stresses the importance of developing and reviewing evacuation, invacuation and lockdown procedures for publicly accessible premises.

Unlike a simple timed fire drill, this training helps organisations understand what actually happens when people move, hesitate, seek information, follow others, become confused or need support during a real emergency.

About the Trainer

Training is delivered by experienced operational professionals with backgrounds in emergency planning, public safety, policing, event command, crowd movement, protective security and incident management.

Our approach is practical, proportionate and realistic.  We do not simply watch a drill and record a time.  We help organisations understand the behaviour, communication and decision making that sit behind a safe and effective evacuation.

The training can be delivered as a planned drill, a supported live exercise or a structured training session followed by a practical evacuation drill and debrief.
